“So, what do you do?”

This question shook the once hard-working, focused, and determined woman inside me. I was walking my 2.5-year-old daughter in the park. We were playing with my neighbor’s dog. Just looking at my daughter running, laughing, falling down, then getting up all by herself was the most satisfying feeling in the world. It felt like I’ve fulfilled all my dreams, and this is exactly what I wanted from life!

A mother came up to me and said, looking at the kids, “They are beautiful, aren’t they?” We got to talking about our kids. She had a handsome little 3-year-old son. Suddenly, she dropped this question on me which felt so heavy in my heart, “so, what do you do.”

I didn’t know what to say. It left me completely flabbergasted. I used to be so confident about the answer to this question. And now, I was just standing there with no words coming out of my mouth. I came home, started doing the chores, but this question just wasn’t getting out of my head. I thought a lot about it. I’ve always been a career-oriented woman, but once I had Roohi, I couldn’t think about anything else. I just wanted to spend every second with her.

I remember when my maternity leave ended, and I had just made up my mind about leaving the job. I didn’t give it much thought and quit the job (I have no regrets about that). But this is one piece of advice I’d like to give to all the working mothers out there who have just had their baby. DO NOT MAKE ANY RASH DECISIONS ABOUT YOUR CAREER. Think about it, talk to your partner about it, talk to your boss, and explore some flexible options. Think about the big picture stuff and how it is going to affect in the long run.

I used to work as a financial analyst in an investment company. I enjoyed my work. I was good at it. I realized how much I missed it, and now I was thinking about getting back in the game! At night, I talked to my husband about it. I told him I wanted to work again, and he was so supportive and excited about it. I was scared to death. Finding a job, going through interviews, I had to do it all over again, but I was adamant. It was about time I got back in there.

I know no time seems to be “perfect” for a mother to start working again, but if you feel even the slightest hunch about going back in there, I suggest you do it because no time will appear to be right. The time is right when YOU want it to be right! So, I started looking for jobs, went on several interviews. To be honest, it was terrifying. It was not easy at all. The hardest part was to leave my little Roohi at home. But I went through with it.

After 4-5 interviews, I finally landed a job in my area of expertise. I’ve been a stay at home mom for almost 3 years. This was a huge transition for me. But I felt confident about it. I had 7 years of work experience. I used my knowledge and skills from my previous job and gave it my all. I didn’t let go of any potential opportunity. I had to be good at it. It’s been 2 years since I started working, and let me tell you, it wasn’t a cakewalk, but I got used to it. I give equal priority to my work and my child. You just need to maintain a stable work-life balance, and it will all be well.

Motherhood is a spice with many flavors. Being a mother doesn’t mean that you have to lose the woman inside you. Explore what you like, take up hobbies, learn new skills, or just do anything which makes you happy. Don’t think about the right time. Just get into it. In the future, I’m sure your child will respect you for making such bold decisions for yourself!
