8 Skin Ingredient Dermatologists Want You to Avoid
super easy
Isn’t there something ecstatic about buying and trying out new beauty products?
There is an ocean of brands offering us different products with absolutely amazing prices! And of course, we are tempted by it! We invest so much for our skin, but have you ever read the “ingredients used” to make your favorite beauty product? Well, these ingredients cannot always be safe. The cosmetics that you use on your skin can contain some toxic and harmful chemicals, leading to several problems when used in the long run. Now you must be thinking; I don’t have to worry about all this because I use only home remedies for my skin. Well, you’re partially correct because while home remedies are the best option for your skin, some of them are highly avoided by dermatologists! You need not worry because we researched for you! Let’s talk about the skincare ingredients you should probably avoid for that healthy skin!
1. Baking Soda Is Dangerous!
At some point in time, we all must have used baking soda for our skin, thinking that it’s natural and can be used for removing blackheads or blemishes! Why did I say it’s dangerous for your skin then? Let me tell you (A little chemistry fact). Our beautiful skin has a pH level between 4.7 and 5.75, which is considered as slightly acidic. Now, baking soda is more alkaline with a pH of 8 or 9 (when mixed with water). Now, when we are applying baking soda on our skin, we are altering or shifting the pH balance, which imbalances our skin (Not good for your skin for a lot of reasons). So, NO-NO to Baking Soda!
2. Toothpaste For Pimples?
I don’t think so! Toothpaste is for brushing your teeth, NOT drying out a pimple! According to dermatologists, toothpaste can irritate your skin even more (Particularly if you have to go outside in the sun). It includes peroxide and baking soda(which we already discussed, is very harmful). So, forget about using toothpaste for acne! Toothpaste is the worst skincare ingredients to avoid
3. Coconut oil is for your hair!
Coconut oil helps your hair in many ways, but we also tend to use it on our faces! Using coconut oil on your face can clog pores, cause breakouts, irritation, and sometimes, blackheads too. So try to keep coconut oil away from your face!
4. Parabens
Parabens are the most common skincare ingredient found in almost every skincare/beauty product, be it be makeup, hair care products, or shaving products. Parabens are used as preservatives in products. They are used to prevent the product from the growth of any fungus or bacteria. This sounds like a good thing, right? It is, after all, preserving our product! But that is not quite true. Parabens are kind of a slow poison for our skin. It can cause really serious problems for your skin and your body overall. If you are using a product with parabens in it for a very long time, then stop immediately!
5. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate(SLS)
SLS is commonly found in shampoos, soaps, hand wash, toothpaste, cleansers, and other things. When we shop for these things(soaps and shampoos), we often look for the “foamiest” product. The foam is caused by SLS. Several studies have linked SLS to eye and skin irritation, reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, and cancer. So, we should definitely avoid using products with sulfates or SLS.
6. Fragrances
We like to use products which give out a good smell. Fragrances attract us! But, these artificial fragrances are all chemicals and can be very toxic for our skin! It can cause respiratory problems and hormonal imbalances (When used in the long run). So try not to buy products with strong fragrances or perfumey smell (They can be harmful to your body)
7. Coal Tar
Coal tar is mostly found in lipsticks and eye products. All those vivid and bright shades of your lipsticks are the results of coal tar! It can cause breakouts, allergies, and can irritate your skin. So, NO for the products containing coal tar (or FD& C and D& C)
8. Alcohol-based products
Alcohol is used a lot in beauty and skincare products. Different kinds of alcohol are used, and not all are harmful to our skin. We have to look out for “drying alcohol” like Ethanol, Methanol, Ethyl Alcohol, Denatured alcohol. It is harmful, especially for dry skin. Alcohol-based toners can be alluring, but instead of this, you can totally use natural rose water or aloe vera or cucumber toners!
Now that you have the appropriate knowledge of which skincare ingredients to avoid, I hope you will check the ingredients before buying any beauty or skincare product. Stay away from chemical and toxic products as much as you can! A better alternative would be Natural Plant-based Products (Go all healthy!).
