We all must have heard that India has been struggling to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council, as China has been the constant thorn in the path. Just on the eve of when India would soon be sitting on the high tables of the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member for a period of two years, beginning from January 1st, 2021; The big news arrives that our country India has managed to win a seat in the prestigious United Nations Commission on Status of Women UNCSW while China, on the other hand, miserably failed to do so.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T. S. Tirumurti was finally elected a member of the principal United Nations body on 14th September 2020 in the first plenary meeting held by ECOSOC in the General Assembly. UNCSW- UN’s weapon to secure women’s lives We may have a different opinion on whether and to what extent Kangana Ranaut is right in her approach, but we do have to agree on one thing that the situation of women empowerment and gender equality is still far from satisfactory even in the current scenario. For those who don’t know about this lesser popularised yet significant branch of the United Nations, The Commission on Status of Women(CSW) is the principal intergovernmental body that is solely dedicated to establishing gender equality and the promotion of women empowerment.

For the grave problem surrounding women’s pathetic condition in terms of gender roles and equality, something as big as this platform was required to draw the attention of world leaders and major steps to be taken in this direction. It is indispensable in its role of promoting women’s rights, presenting the true scenario of women’s lives and challenges they still face throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
